NEW YORK — Talks between Iran and the United States yielded no major breakthrough but were “largely positive,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday.

Asked by Al-Monitor whether there had been any face-to-face contact between the two sides in New York, Rubio said only that “human beings talked to each other yesterday.” He declined to confirm Qatar’s reported role as a mediator.

“I don't want to characterize the talks yesterday or tell you who was in there or what the basis of it was,” Rubio said during a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly summit.

"I don't want to mischaracterize this as a major breakthrough,” Rubio said. “But at the same time, I think it was significant that at least there was a conversation.”
