Iran offered to help facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen as Houthi attacks on the kingdom intensified and Yemen’s Saudi-backed government advanced legislation targeting the group’s activities and financing.

The diplomatic exchange came after a weekend of deadly strikes on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and amid a Saudi-backed offensive against the Houthis along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

What happened: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke Sunday with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, about the regional escalation and efforts to reduce tensions, according to the Saudi account of the call.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Araghchi offered assistance to initiate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen and facilitate a political solution. He warned that reliance on military action would further complicate the situation.
