Russia’s foreign minister is in Tehran for meetings with senior Iranian officials aimed at “de-escalation,” as negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain at a standstill.

What happened: Sergey Lavrov arrived in the Iranian capital on Monday for an official visit focused on bilateral relations and regional and international developments, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting his counterpart Abbas Araghchi said that cooperation between the two countries “will play a proper role in establishing stability in the region." "We are determined to continue our relations,” Iran's semiofficial Mehr News Agency reported.

Lavrov struck a similar tone, saying that Russia “has no intention to abandon the implementation of economic and investment agreements with Iran,” despite the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States.
