ANKARA — Turkey’s competition watchdog has announced an investigation into Google’s AI search tools over concerns they could reduce traffic to news websites, ordering Google to establish conditions that treat news publishers fairly.

Details: The investigation into Google and its parent company, Alphabet — a major player in artificial intelligence — aims to determine whether Google’s AI search tools, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, reduce traffic to news websites, impose unfair content-use terms, shut out competitors or favor some news outlets over others, according to a statement released Monday by the Turkish Competition Board.

Google’s AI Overviews feature provides AI-generated summaries drawing on news websites and other sources. Al-Monitor reached out to Google for comment but had not received a response as of this writing.

The board said its preliminary inquiry, launched Aug. 27, examined four potential competition concerns related to Google’s AI search tools.
